Negril Beach Resorts
Negril is a largest beach resort in the English speaking Caribbean. It is located at the most western tip of the island and spans the parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover. There are two major sides to Negril, the hip strip and west end. The hip strip sports some of the most sought after Jamaica beach resorts such as Point Village Resorts. While south of downtown Negril offers several great art and craft as well as souvenir shopping at very reasonable and low rates.
Not to mention the IN-BOND or duty free stores. The southern part of the fantastic seven mile beach is in the parish Westmoreland. Further along the coastline resorts on the beach are located in the parish of Hanover. The largest town and the capital of the parish Westmoreland is Savanna-la-Mar.
Negril is the short version of the Spanish word “Negrillo” and it was originally called this by the Spanish settlers in 1494 because of the black cliffs on what is known as the West End of Negril. Development as a prominent Jamaican beach resort started in the 1950s. Access to the resort area was made possible by ferries and travelers had to swim ashore.
Negril is very diverse; the western coast contains the Jamaica’s finest and best beaches stretching more than seven miles along a sandbar. This is known as the 7-Mile Beach. Unfortunately the strip is just 4 miles in length starting from the Negril River to the south and Rutland Point in the north.
For the eco-tourism traveler the inland side of Negril’s main thoroughfare road and the east of the shore is a swamp called the Great Morass which houses the Royal Palm Wildlife Reserve. These wetlands are protected due to the fact that the wetlands cause growth of coral in the region and when they decay form coral sand along the resorts beachfront.
Negril Jamaica beach resorts have been rated as one of the best travel destinations worldwide. North of the beach are the major all inclusive resorts while to the south are the smaller sized family owned hotels. This splendid combination of rooms and services make Negril unique. West End Road, also known as the cliffs have resorts that offer privacy and peace and quiet. Great locations for snorkeling, scuba and surface diving are popular along Negril west end. There are great cliff jumping points as high as 40 feet high. Rick’s Cafe Bar and Grill is perfect for cliff jumpers and people who like to watch the sunset.
